Title: Matunuck

Artist: Stephen Cook

Medium: Charcoal, ink, acrylic, latex paint, spray paint, oil stick on large-scale canvas

Description:

A large-scale abstract depiction of a Matunuck sunset in southern Rhode Island, this work layers charcoal, ink, acrylic, latex paint, spray paint, and oil stick to evoke the intensity and transience of evening light. Broad, sweeping brushstrokes and gestural marks register the movement of wind and tide; the layered media produce a tactile surface that alternates between smooth washes and textured scumble.

The composition balances soft pastel lighting with dense, dark plant-like forms along the lower plane. Pale washes and diluted pigments suggest the fading sun and atmospheric haze, while concentrated fields of ink and charcoal cut through that light, defining silhouetted vegetation and marsh grasses.

This painting is less an exact topographic study and more an emotional cartography: the gestures and contrasts map the sensations of that particular place and hour, wind, salt air, the day’s slow departure, rendered through an economy of mark-making and layered materiality. The result is a vivid impression of southern Rhode Island at dusk, at once luminous and brooding.
